Sashiko Stitched / Indigo Dyed "Bloom Tapestry"
Heavy weight linen naturally dyed with indigo and hand embroidered with japanese sashiko thread. Used as a wall hanging or furniture covering. The natural fibers make it soft and delightful to use for warmth as a light blanket or displayed as art to bring texture and beauty into a room. The front is a dark indigo achieved by multiple dips in the dye vat. The back is a light indigo dipped once in the vat. I bundled up and bound the fabric to create a surface pattern of fluid and organic shapes.
This design was inspired by the use of my materials, sashiko thread and natural indigo dye. My love for hand quilting began a decade ago when I discovered japanese sashiko thread. The simple running stitches, larger than traditional quilting stitches are sewn in repeating patterns. Traditionally, white cotton thread is used on indigo blue fabric. I was enthralled with the quality and history of the thread and have continued using it in my practice ever since. This design is a simplified adaptation of stitch found in old textiles from Japan.
