Paradigm Shift
If the stitches in this quilt could play back the recording of time, it would be a song of praise. The idea for this piece came from pure effervescent energy, the first month after my second child was born. My body was charged with enthusiasm and grounded in love. The vail between life and death was raised and a knowingness settled inside me.
The dynamics of this work express a variety of emotions through color. The sympathetic rainbow of colors feel harmonious and playful, like a dance. The eye jumps between a kaleidoscope pattern and a four point black star. The depth of space is achieved with hand-dyed natural black, a color that takes patience, time and labor to achieve.
The colors of this quilt are hand-dyed with plants: logwood, indigo, madder root, osage wood, pecans, and oak gulls. Made with organic cotton and linen. Exquisitely hand-stitched in the seams of the kaleidoscope pattern, giving the quilt structure and longevity, while also creating depth and texture.
Made block-by-block, stitch-by-stitch, one step at a time, a human pace.
